Under a contract between the State Border Guard Service (SBGS) and the Vilkaviškis-based joint-stock company "Gintrėja," construction of a 44.6 km-long security fence is to start at the Lithuanian and Russian border in the near future.
As many as 27 bids were made after the SBGS launched a tender for public procurement of that infrastructure. The contract with the successful bidder, "Gintrėja," entered into force on 10 May 2017 after the latter delivered a mandatory contract implementation guarantee.
The contract is worth €1,335 million, with the funds allocated from the Lithuanian budget. The 2 m-high, segmented, metal security fence featuring some additional installations is to be constructed in several sections and cover a total of 44.6 km. It is to extend from the junction of the Lithuanian, Polish and Russian borders towards the town of Vištytis and further on, in several sections, up to the river of Nemunas (Neman) crossing the districts of Šakiai and Vilkaviškis. The 109 km-long border section stretching further along the Nemunas has already seen installation of technical surveillance systems.
The new fence is to stretch along land border sections.
All infrastructure works are to be completed by 20 December 2017.
